A car overturned on the westbound carriageway of the M56 near junction 9 at the Lymm interchange/M6 in the early hours of Friday.
Traffic was stopped temporarily between junction 9 and junction 8 at the Bowdon, Altrincham and A556 interchange. North West Motorway Police attended the incident.
Writing on Twitter, officers said the driver was located a short time after the crash, allegedly trying to leave the scene. They said he is now in custody after reportedly failing a drug test.
