Sex offenders, rapists and a killer have been brought to justice after victims appealed a decision NOT to prosecute them. Exclusive data shows 132 cases went through the courts in one year after challenges brought under the Victims’ Right to Review (VRR) scheme.

Seventy-five people were jailed and 57 were acquitted – meaning 56 per cent of cases resulted in conviction after the Crown Prosecution Service and police initially decided not to prosecute.

Among the successful prosecutions was a manslaughter challenge, 38 cases of violence, seven thefts, four frauds and 14 sex offences including four allegations of rape and child sex crimes.
