Coronavirus widespread in UK 'months ago' as expert criticises 'lack of vigilance'

One of the world's leading human genetics experts said coronavirus was widespread in the UK at the very start of the pandemic.

And Dr Kari Stefansson insisted that “a lack of vigilance” by British authorities allowed the virus to take hold. Dr Stefansson is part of an extensive programme in Iceland to genetically sequence every positive case of the killer bug there to gain a better understanding of it.

He claims sequencing of genetic material tells them where the cases come from because the virus has "barcode for every part of the world".

Speaking to Sky News, the professor said to begin with the majority of cases moved into Iceland from people who had been holidaying in the Alps.
