The UK's social distancing measures could last until next year, England's Chief Medical Officer has warned. Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said social restrictions will need to remain in place until a vaccine or effective Covid-19 drug treatments are made available.

Either of those becoming available in the next calendar year are "incredibly unlikely", he said. He added: "This disease is not going to be eradicated, it is not going to disappear. "So we have to accept that we are working with a disease that we are going to be with globally for the forseeable future.
