It could be argued that New Islington is the Cinderella of Manchester. Just 20 years ago the location's closest claim to fame was being the backdrop to Shameless.
The area, formerly known as the Cardroom Estate, was a failed 1970s regeneration that had meant to resurrect the lost jobs and decaying houses of its industrial hey-day.
Over the span of 22 years, the Cardroom Estate continued to crumble until it lostits shops, pubs, and eventually its primary school.
What had once been an area of high hopes had soon been reduced to a neighbourhood known for both crime real ... and fictional.
