One hundred and fifty thousand babies don't legally exist and thousands of elderly drivers have been inadvertently "stranded" at home waiting for driving licence renewals due to backlogs, it has been claimed.

Despite lockdown restrictions continuing to be eased, life remains on hold for many due to delays at official agencies, including the NHS.

Large swathes of babies born from March 23 may still not officially exist, with parents being asked to wait five weeks for an appointment at registry offices, with backlogs of up to 4,000, reports the Daily Mail.

As a result, the Local Government Association is urging the Government to consider allowing birth registrations - which were completely suspended for three months - be done over the phone
