Four people have died following a large explosion at a water treatment area in Avonmouth, police have confirmed. A major incident was declared at Wessex Water's Bristol water recycling centre in Avonmouth, after reports of a "large explosion" at 11.22am.
This afternoon police said three Wessex Water employees and a contractor had died as a result of the blast. Another person suffered non life-threatening injuries.
The families of those who died have been informed, Chief Inspector Mark Runacres told a press conference at the scene this afternoon.
Eye-witnesses reported hearing a loud bang, seeing people running and ‘at least 10 ambulances’ rushing to what has been declared by police as a 'major incident'.
