As many as 2.5million more households in the UK may now qualify for free school meals following the coronavirus outbreak. That's because 2,570,840 extra households have started claiming universal credit since March 1 - and receiving the benefit is a key factor in deciding who gets free school meals.
To be eligible, you need to be a parent with a child in reception, year one or year two and earn less than £7,400 a year - excluding benefits.
If you qualify, your child will continue to get free school meals until 31 March 2022, even if your earnings increase or you stop getting universal credit.
Being enrolled also means you'll get access to free school meals this summer, which can help if you're struggling to make ends met.
