Residents could be fined £1,000 if surveillance cameras find their bin lids are not closed. Warnings were issued by the council as lorries cannot lift the bins for emptying if the lids are open.
The clampdown has angered some homeowners in Darlington, Co Durham. The letter states: “Anyone leaving a bin out without its lid fully closed is committing an offence.” Residents also face a fine for“not putting waste bins on the back edge of their properties and recycling at the front’’.
Refuse is taken in a smaller wagon from the rear of the properties targeted, with recycling picked up in front. Local councillor Cyndi Hughes called the notices “officious and threatening”. What is your view?
