Ally McCoist could have spoken forever about Walter Smith’s achievements in the game. After all, there were enough of them in a career that placed his former manager in the pantheon of Scottish football greats.
But Smith was more, much more, than a gaffer to the legendary Rangers striker and, within an hour of the news of the 73-year-old’s passing being announced, McCoist spoke from the heart about the man more than the manager.
This man, normally ebullient and effervescent, struggled at times to contain his emotions but that merely underlined the depth of feelings McCoist has, not only for Smith, but for his family.
