A lot of people ignored the lockdown and took VE Day celebrations too far - GMP responded to 2,419 reports of lockdown-busting parties at the weekend

Greater Manchester celebrated VE Day with gusto this weekend - but police responded to 2,419 reports of parties or gatherings that allegedly broke lockdown rules, the M.E.N.

can reveal. The force responded to 853 reports of gatherings or house parties on bank holiday Friday (VE Day) and then 1,566 more on Saturday and Sunday.

The force also received 5,020 calls to 999 between Friday and Saturday, a third higher than the weekend before, and 4,705 calls to the non-emergency 101 number, up 16 per cent.

Chief Constable Ian Hopkins described the weekend as 'the busiest since lockdown began'. The nation was urged to mark VE Day by holding street parties whilst at the same time observing social distancing rules to prevent the spread of
