Japanese indigo denim. In Japan, there’s such an emphasis on craftsmanship, and as a result I’m always looking at how things are made.
Craftsmanship doesn’t have to mean something from a luxury brand. In fact I’ve often been disappointed by pieces from the more expensive end of the spectrum.
When I assisted in the fashion cupboard at a New York style magazine, I’d turn items from big brands inside out and be aghast at how badly made they were.
That’s not to say all expensive items are badly made, but it doesn’t always correlate to price. When I find simple, beautiful things, I hold onto them.
