Award-winning butcher Simon Howie has been granted planning permission - subject to conditions - by Perth and Kinross Council (PKC) to erect a 104m high turbine at his Perthshire farm.

His factory - which has 141 employees and supplies several well-known supermarkets - is now a stop closer to achieving Net Zero and running off grid. The application for the turbine - which will be 500 metres from the historic village of Dunning and on the edge of a conservation area - received 79 objections including one from Dunning Community Council who described it as a "totally unsuitable structure in a totally unsuitable location".Simon Howie Butchers was founded in December 1986 when Simon (now 57) opened his first small shop in Dunning.

In 1997 a 10,000 square feet factory was opened and is now eight times the size. The business supplies Tesco, Aldi, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, the Co-op, Asda and Gleneagles Hotel.PKC's Planning and Placemaking Committee met on Wednesday March 13 to consider the application for the 2.3MW 104m high turbine - with a hub height of around 69m - at Findony Farm, Dunning where Simon's family has been farming for over 100 years.

The plans were recommended for approval by council officers.Dunning Community councillor Colin Young told the councillors it was "unacceptable" for the tall turbine to be so close to the village.
