Reports earlier had described the woman as in critical condition. Pictures showed a woman covered in blood as emergency services treated her on the floor of the Capitol building.
A member of law enforcement shot the woman, sources told NBC News. Authorities have since secured the Capitol complex after the day's riots.
It came after a day of violent confrontations as Donald Trump supporters stormed the complex. A 6pm curfew has been imposed by Washington DC's mayor to clear the streets.
