Woman rescued from canal after going into water to save her dog

A woman had to be rescued from a canal after going into the water to help her dog. Emergency services, including a specialist water rescue unit, were called to Marple Wharf in Stockport at 2.30pm today (Saturday) after the woman got into difficulty.

Both the dog and its owner were pulled to safety, with the woman later receiving care from paramedics. The rescue operation at the Macclesfield Canal, off Brabyns Brows, lasted around 40 minutes.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Just after 2.30pm this afternoon, firefighters were called to reports of a person in the water in the canal at Marple Wharf.

Three fire engines from Stockport, Marple and Eccles fire stations, along with the Technical Rescue Unit from Ashton fire station and the Water Incident Unit from Eccles fire station, quickly arrived at the scene. "A woman had gone into the water to rescue her dog that had fallen into the canal.
