Car erupts into flames after smashing into bollard before fire crews close off road

A car erupted into flames after smashing into a bollard in east Manchester on Sunday night (January 5). Fire crews, police and paramedics raced to the incident on North Road in Clayton shortly before 7pm.

It is thought a car had ploughed into a bollard near to a crossing. Pictures from the scene showed huge plumes of smoke billowing overhead as emergency crews tried to bring the dramatic blaze under control.

The road was closed in both directions between Clayton Street and Clayton Hall Road amid the emergency response. Further details about the collision have not yet been confirmed.

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for a statement. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly before 7pm this evening (Sunday 5 January), one fire engine from Philips Park Community Fire Station was called to attend an incident on North Road, Clayton. “Crews worked quickly to extinguish a car which had set on fire following a road traffic collision.
