Matondo is already familiar with Manchester after leaving City for Schalke last year. Despite an array of excellent performances at youth level for City, as well as in various Welsh international age groups, it was always unlikely that he would break into Pep Guardiola’s team as a teenager, and therefore opted to chase first-team football abroad - just as Sancho did two years earlier.
