Face masks will soon be compulsory for shoppers in England, after the government announced plans to implement new coronavirus protection measures.

From Friday 24 July, masks will be required by law when in shops and supermarkets, as well as on public transport. In Scotland, masks are already compulsory in shops, whereas in Wales and Northern Ireland they are encouraged but not required by law.

Scientific advice states that when used correctly, face coverings can reduce the spread of coronavirus droplets, and can protect others from catching the virus.

Those caught without a mask, or who refuse to wear one, can be fined up to £100 by the police. The shop also has the right to refuse entry to anyone who refuses to comply with the new
