He captured the hearts of millions as he walked up and down his garden last spring to raise money for the NHS. Captain Tom Moore - as he was then - set out with the target of walking 100 laps before his 100th birthday and raise £1,000.
In the end his efforts led to donations topping £32million for NHS Charities Together. That and his optimistic outlook on life - his motto "tomorrow will be a good day" became the title of his autobiography - helped him achieve national treasure status in double quick time.
Sadly, Captain Sir Tom passed away at Bedford Hospital on Tuesday, surrounded by his family, but there are now plans to remember and pay tribute to the Second World War and NHS hero.
