The late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was born in Corfu, Greece on June 10, 1921 and was a member of both the royal families of Greece and Denmark.

After a difficult and nomadic childhood, as well as a successful career in the Royal Navy, Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten married Princess Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947.

In a union that would last 73 years, the Queen and the Duke were a constant support to one another - with the late monarch famously referring to her husband as her "strength and stay".

As we reflect on what would have been the late Duke of Edinburgh's 102nd birthday today, royal expert Jennie Bond has explained why the public didn't know how essential Prince Philip was to the Royal Family until after his death in 2021.
