Venice Prizewinner, Italy’s Oscar Entry ‘Vermiglio’ Sells to Major Territories for Charades (EXCLUSIVE)
variety.comElsa Keslassy International Correspondent Paris-based sales company Charades has closed deals with distributors in major territories for “Vermiglio,” Maura Delpero‘s movie which won Venice’s Silver Lion Award and was just selected as Italy’s Oscar submission.
The critically laureled film was acquired by Sideshow and Janus Films for U.S. rights following its North American premiere in Toronto, and has now been sold by Charades for the U.K. (Modern), Australia/New Zealand (Madman), Spain (Karma Films), Portugal (Leopardo Filmes), Greece (Weird Wave), Israel (Lev Cinema), Lebanon and Gulf (Moving Turtle), CIS (Exponenta), Bulgaria (MCF Megacom Film), Hungary (Mozinet Ltd), Poland (Gutek Film LTD), French-Speaking Africa (Moving Turtle) and Indonesia (Falcon). “Vermiglio” will also be released in France (Paname Distribution), Benelux (O’Brother), and in Italy where Lucky Red already did a limited release on Sept.
19 and will expand starting this weekend. Charades is currently negotiating deals for Latin America and Scandinavia. Set at the end of World War II, the movie unfolds in a scenic Alpine village where the arrival of a soldier causes disruption in the dynamics between three sisters.
The film has earned unanimous praise, with Variety describing it as “quietly breathtaking,” as it “unfolds from tiny tactile details of furnishings and fabrics and the hide of a dairy cow, into a momentous vision of everyday rural existence in the high Italian Alps.” Delpero made her feature debut with “Maternal” which revolved around an Argentinian refuge for teenage mothers run by nuns. “Vermiglio” was produced by Cinedora and RAI Cinema, in co-production with Charades Production and Versus Production, with the participation of.
