Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said 53 people in England have now died after testing positive for the coronavirus. There has also been one death in Wales and one in Scotland bringing the total number of deaths in the UK to 55.
It comes just hours after it was announced there were 1,543 patients in the UK, an increase of 171 since yesterday. It was announced on Sunday that there had been 35 deaths from the disease in the UK so far.
Making a statement in the Commons on the coronavirus outbreak, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the pandemic is "the most serious public health emergency that our nation has faced for a generation".
