Millions of dead fish have washed up at a Greek port in a mass die-off connected to extreme climate fluctuations, authorities said.

Businesses are struggling in the town of Volos, around 200 miles north of Athens as the smell caused by the fish has put off visitors and tourists.

The town’s Chamber of Commerce has warned that the smell caused by the fish is “repulsive to both residents and visitors”. It said commercial activity has been reduced by 80 per cent in the past three days since the dead fish - around 100 tonnes - washed up in and around the port.

It said that it was taking legal action to seek damages. In a statement the chamber stated: “Businesses along the seafront, particularly in the catering industry, are now suspending operations. “A strong stench along the seafront is repulsive to both residents and visitors … delivering a severe blow to tourism in Volos.” READ MORE: Ryanair boss calls on all UK airports to introduce strict limit for all passengers One business owner, Dimitris Iakovidis, told local news site ekathimerini.com that ‘revenue is down to nought’.
