Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has shrugged off fresh pleas to save free TV licences for the over-75s. The Tory minister rebuffed an appeal from campaigning Labour peer Lord Foulkes to intervene and protect the lifeline.
In a letter to Lord Foulkes, seen by the Mirror, Mr Dowden says: “The BBC remains responsible for the future of the over-75s concession from 1 June 2020, as was agreed by Parliament. “This was subject to public discussion and debated extensively during the passage of the Digital Economy Act 2017. “This legislation provides that the future of the concession and the introduction of any changes to it are the responsibility of the BBC, not of the government.” Lord Foulkes said tonight: “This is a growing scandal. “While the
