Top-flight footballer dead aged just 22 after car crash

Footballer Marco Angulo has tragically passed away at the age of 22, following a car crash.The young star was involved in a horrific collision in Quito, Ecuador's capital, in the early hours of October 7.The talented midfielder, who had represented the Ecuador national team three times and top-flight club LDU Quito, was immediately rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery to alleviate pressure in his head caused by the accident.

He also suffered a lung contusion which necessitated a chest tube, although no active bleeding was found. Over the past 35 days, messages of love and support have poured in for Marco, but sadly it was announced this morning that he had lost his battle with his injuries.

Roberto Cabezas Simisterra, a defender for Independiente Juniors, and Victor Charcopa Nazareno, cousin of Cuniburo Futbol Club star Diogo Nazareno, also tragically lost their lives in the crash.

It's believed that the Ford Explorer carrying Marco hit a metal structure on the Ruminahui highway in southeast Quito around 4:30am.
