First detected in South Africa, Omicron has been deemed a 'variant of concern' by the World Health Organisation.The strain continues to cause worry as infections continue to rise throughout the world with a total of 389 confirmed or possible cases and 108 confirmed cases in Scotland.Scientists are worried that the new strain will be able to evade current vaccine immunity due to the large number of mutations.

However, bosses at Pfizer have said a third dose of their vaccine boosts antibodies and provides protection against the new strain.
