They fled horror at home - now Manchester is giving these young people sanctuary

Teenagers and young adults who have been separated from their families as they flee desperate situations are being offered a fresh start in Greater Manchester.

Around 240 unaccompanied asylum-seeking children will be supported by a new project over the next three years. Greater Manchester Youth Network (GMYN) has launched the programme to support 15 to 21-year-olds, who are now living in the region.

Programme manager Eleanor Reardon said: "We want to show children seeking sanctuary in our city how welcoming Greater Manchester can be. "This new programme will give asylum-seeking children a space to make friends, learn skills and start to feel at home here.” Eleanor is one of three new members of the GMYN team who are working on the programme, alongside coordinator Sarah Sunarko and worker Faisal Al Raisi. GMYN is also working with Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit to support young people subject to immigration control with free advice, representation and support services.
