A leading barrister is set to be appointed to assess the cases of three women who have accused Greater Manchester Police of unjustified strip searches while in custody.

Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, said he was in discussion with Dame Vera Baird KC and would be asking her to look at the care the women received after they were arrested.

He described all three as 'extremely distressing cases' and said one of the cases has been passed by GMP to the police watchdog - the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The other two cases, he added, were only brought to his attention recently. He said he has spoken to the leadership team at Greater Manchester Police and 'had an assurance that there will be an investigation'.
