An eye-witness has described how residents used buckets of water and a fire extinguisher in a bid to save a man who 'set himself on fire' on a petrol station forecourt.

The emergency services rushed to the Tesco forecourt on Victoria Avenue East in Blackley at around 7:35pm on Monday (September 4) to reports of concern for the welfare of a man.

It is understood the man set himself on fire. He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening burns after being treated by fire crews at the scene.

It is understood the man has now died of his injuries. One eye-witness told the M.E.N. members of the public put out the fire before the fire service arrived.
