Topshop… but it hadn’t been a suitable place for adults for years. Meanwhile Marks & Spencer has raised its game considerably. (True, the woman who shops in M&S wasn’t necessarily the woman who buzzed around TS – but maybe we’re not that woman any more either.) M&S stores generally feel the opposite of uplifting (if only they’d fix the lighting), but think of them like eBay – a less than lovely place with some terrific finds, especially knitwear.

Its trousers have become quietly impressive too, with many styles available in regular and petite lengths. And the gymwear is unbeatable for the price.

Also filling the classic gap is the new (and affordable) John Lewis & Partners line – check out its good-value coats. Uniqlo’s cotton and linen shirts may not be as crisp as those from WNU (With Nothing Underneath, which are a fabulous £100-apop treat) but are great for everyday.

Keep it simple. Focus on fabrics rather than embellishment. While Arket’s utility look isn’t for everyone, careful shopping there can reap rewards even for maximalists, particularly its leather shoes and bags.
