Hillary Rodham had never married Bill Clinton? So goes the premise of Curtis Sittenfeld’s latest novel, a fictional retelling of Hillary’s life.
Rodham opens with Hillary making her famous 1969 graduation speech at Wellesley College, then meeting a deeply charismatic Bill at Yale Law School… after which it forks off into a fantasy, when Bill’s wandering eye puts an end to their relationship.At 432 pages, it’s a doorstop of a novel but a pacy one too, with plenty of sex and gossip – and a cameo from a certain yellow-haired, orange-faced president-to-be.
What’s the buzz? Kate Atkinson called it ‘startlingly good’ and counts Sittenfeld among her favourite writers. HBO bought film rights to Sittenfeld’s previous bestseller, Prep; this seems.
