U2 are back with their first new song in two years – listen to “Atomic City’ and watch the accompanying music video below.The Irish band have returned to the post-punk of their heyday with a stirring guitar hook reminiscent of their 1983 hit ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ and a chorus that channels Blondie.Vocalist Bono sings about freedom (“I’m free/ I see what’s in front of me/ And your freedom is contagious/ What you’ve got I wanna be,”) and nods to “Atomic City” aka Las Vegas, the city in which the accompanying music video is set, as somewhere to find it.It’s not known whether the song, which is U2’s first since 2021 when they released ‘Your Song Saved My Life‘ for the Sing 2 soundtrack, will feature on an as-yet-unannounced album. The band have teased a record that prioritises a “guitar music” sound.The new single was produced by Jacknife Lee and Steve Lillywhite and recorded at Sound City in LA.

U2 played a surprise show in front of the Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas last night (September 16) while filming a music video, where they played a new song live.The song, ‘Atomic City’, is believed to be about the very city the Irish quartet were playing in, and contained the lyrics “I’m free, so unexpectedly/I’m free from what’s in front of me!” and “I’ve got the key to the cages, waiting for my dice/I came here for the fight/I’m front row in Las Vegas. And there’s a big one on tonight”.It is believed the band were performing to around 250 extras, and frontman Bono’s vocals were live but the music was recorded.The song is reportedly going to be released before the band’s forthcoming residency at the new MSG Sphere in the city.

U2 have discussed their upcoming shows at the Las Vegas Sphere, which will see them take to the stage without drummer Larry Mullen Jr.The Irish rock veterans are set to kick off their Las Vegas residency later this month at the highly-anticipated new Sphere venue, and have confirmed that they will be playing the first few shows without their resident drummer.Set to launch on September 29, the ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere’ shows will be Bono and co.’s first live shows since the end of 2019, but will see a replacement for Mullen as he continues to recover from surgery.“The whole band and I’m sure the audience are going to be very sad and miss Larry,” said bassist Adam Clayton, speaking to the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column (via Irish Mirror). “He wants to come back, he wants to be able to have a long career and continue his drumming so he’s taking care of those injuries.”He also explained that, while Mullen continues to recover, Krezip drummer Bram van den Berg will be taking his place and performing at the first run of Nevada shows.

U2 have announced ‘Zoo Station’ – an immersive experience for fans, designed ahead of their upcoming Sphere shows.Opening on September 28, the immersive fan portal, called ‘Zoo Station: A U2:UV Experience’ is designed to help fans gather a deeper understanding of the band’s acclaimed album ‘Achtung Baby’.Aiming to provide “a unique opportunity to interact with U2’s rich artistic legacy”, ‘Zoo Station’ is developed by Vibee, a Live Nation-founded destination experience company and VIP package provider, and is set to be the “ultimate hub for fans”.A ​​‘Zoo TV Cinema’ is featured within the experience, which has been curated by The Edge, as well as an Anton Corbijn Gallery, limited edition merchandise, VIP lounges and much more.It was developed in collaboration with Gavin Friday, U2’s longtime Creative Director, and also had direct input from the band members.
