Herpes might be a cure for cancer according to groundbreaking research

READ MORE: TikToker, 21, gunned down after mysterious late-night phone caller said 'go outside' Lead author of the research and professor of Biological Cancer Therapies at The Institute of Cancer Research, Kevin Harrington, said: "Our study shows that a genetically engineered, cancer-killing virus can deliver a one-two punch against tumours - directly destroying cancer cells from within while also calling in the immune system against them."The viral treatment developed by Replimune is known as RP2 and is genetically engineered from the herpes simplex 1 strain, responsible for most cases of oral herpes and some cases of genital herpes in humans.RP2 works in two ways - firstly, the virus can reportedly selectively infect and kill certain cancer cells when directly injected into a tumour.It also blocks a protein produced by cancerous cells, known as CTLA-4, and forces them to produce a different molecule called GM-CSF, which weakens the cancer’s ability to fight the immune system.In an initial trial conducted by the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, nine patients who hadn't responded to other treatments were given RP2 on its own to test its effectiveness.It was also given to 30 patients in combination with another treatment.Three of the nine patients on RP2 alone
