The collaborators share their favourite memories and the impact both Daft Punk and the album have had on their music and careers.The first two episodes of Memory Tapes feature The Strokes’ frontman Julian Casablancas who collaborated with the French duo on ‘Instant Crush’ and pianist Chilly Gonzales who played on ‘Within’ and ‘Give Life Back To Music’.Upcoming episodes will include contributions from Pharrell Williams, Todd Edwards, DJ Falcon, Nile Rodgers and others.The interviews were conducted at Henson Studios in Los Angeles and Gang Studios in Paris which are two of the five spaces in which ‘Random Access Memories’ was recorded.

The Strokes‘ Julian Casablancas has shared his thoughts on The 1975‘s recent controversy in Malaysia that saw them banned for taking a stance on LGBTQ matters on stage.Last weekend, The 1975’s set at Good Vibes Festival in Kuala Lumpur was cut short – and later, the rest of the festival was cancelled – after frontman Matty Healy criticised anti-LGBTQ laws and kissed bassist Ross MacDonald onstage.During their headline performance on Friday (July 21), Healy called out the Malaysian government and said: “I do not see the point of inviting The 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with.”Since then, The 1975 have been banned from performing in the country, and the frontman has received backlash from Malaysia’s LGBTQ+ community, claiming that his actions undermined years of action by local activists.The 1975 are now also potentially facing a class action lawsuit by Malaysian artists and festival vendors over the festival’s cancellation.The Strokes’ Casablancas, who was unable to perform at Good Vibes Festival with his band, shared on social media this weekend that they are currently working on a way to perform in Malaysia.The frontman then elaborated on his thoughts regarding the controversy in an Instagram reply, writing: “it def helped the white outsider awareness yes, for sure… i felt the same. had no idea.

Albert Hammond Jr has spoken to NME about his new hip-hop-inspired single ‘100-99’, his upcoming solo album ‘Melodies On Hiatus’, working with Arctic Monkeys‘ Matt Helders, and progress on The Strokes’ next record.The guitarist and singer-songwriter shared his latest solo track earlier this week (April 4) and announced details of the new record – which will be his fifth solo album and the follow-up to 2018’s ‘Francis Trouble’.The LP’s first single finds Hammond Jr combining a beat inspired by ‘90s hip-hop and a glacial guitar melody as he sings: “I’m not safe / I’ve made mistakes, I would again / In spite of what it cost me.” It’s a merging of styles that he has wanted to try out for some years.“I’d write riffs and think, ‘I can imagine that looped with a beat and someone rapping over it’,” he told NME. “This song just happened to work [like that].

Daft Punk have announced a 10th anniversary expanded edition of their final album ‘Random Access Memories’.The reissue features 35 minutes of outtakes and unheard demos across nine tracks. It will be available across various formats including 3 LPs, 2 CDs, streaming platforms and additionally a spatial audio (Atmos) mix of the original album will be made available for the first time.It will be released on May 12 and can be pre-ordered here.
