Marcus Mumford has spoken out in a new interview about Winston Marshall’s decision to leave Mumford & Sons.Marshall helped form the folk-rock band in 2007, but faced an online backlash in March 2021 after tweeting praise for a book by the controversial US journalist Andy Ngo titled Unmasked: Inside Antifa’s Radical Plan To Destroy Democracy.In a since-deleted tweet, Marshall said the book was “important” and hailed Ngo as a “brave man”. After taking an initial break from the group following the backlash, Marshall officially left Mumford & Sons in June 2021.Speaking about Marshall’s departure now, Mumford told GQ: “I actually really begged him not to leave.” Despite not sharing his political beliefs, Mumford added: “I think you can disagree and work together.”He went on: “I just don’t think it’s the job of musicians to have all those thoughts. And I think Win probably agrees.

Gorillaz co-creator and animator Jamie Hewlett has announced a new art book called Phoo Action: Silver Jubilee.Hewlett, who founded the cartoon band along with Damon Albarn in 1998, will release the 368-page hardcover title in late November via Z2 Comics. It’s priced at £41.56, and is available to pre-order here.The book contains an oral history of Phoo Action, the TV pilot that was created by Hewlett and Mat Wakeham.

NME about his forthcoming ‘The Steam Packet UK Tour’, as well as providing an update on The Libertines‘ long-awaited fourth album.The tour will see The Libertines drummer showcase acts from his 25 Hour Convenience Store indie label and will be headlined by raucous Southampton garage-rockers Dead Freights, with support from fellow stablemates Casino, Bear Park and Young Culture. Powell, along with his label partner, former Factory Records managing director Eric Langley, said he wants his imprint to be there for the artists who believe their voice cannot be heard.“The label has always stood for one thing, which is I’m really anti the direction that the industry takes in regard to whom they should sign,” he said.

The Killers have shared the cinematic new video for their recent single ‘Boy’ – you can watch the clip below.The band debuted the track, which was officially released last week, at Mad Cool Festival in Madrid last month. According to frontman Brandon Flowers, it “was the song that took me back home, and was sort of the impetus for writing [2021 album] ‘Pressure Machine’”.“There’s an optimism to it,” Flowers told NME about ‘Boy’ last month.

Pavement are to be honoured with some album-themed pierogi at an Ohio restaurant next week.The event will take place in Parma, Ohio. According to Pitchfork, it will see “local businesses Schnitz Ale Brewery, Rudy’s Strudel, and the Current Year Records and Tapes joining forces for the ticketed event, which will feature ‘special varieties of Pavement pierogi,’ paired beer flights to match, and a vinyl DJ set by the band’s own Bob Nastanovich.”In a statement about the event, Nastanovich said: “I’ve been thrilled and amazed by a group of Pavement enthusiasts striving to get our band to play at a local football stadium for some time.

Mykki Blanco has today (August 10) shared a new song, ‘Steps’ – check it out below.The song features MNEK and Saul Williams and is taken from Blanco’s upcoming new album, ‘Stay Close To Music’, which arrives on October 14 via Transgressive records.Speaking of their new single, Blanco explained, “I think a song like ‘Steps’ is a testament to what can happen when three very unique artists are given time to create a meditation together – to respond to one another when the moment is right –  almost like the lines of a haiku – maybe ‘Steps’ is a prayer unique in its ability to transcend and transform and provide peace without necessarily providing an answer.”Mykki continued: “In many ways ‘Steps’ symbolises a pointed progression in my songwriting. I think as a songwriter, I was not always willing to be so vulnerable.

Courtney Barnett has announced details of a new ‘Here And There’ festival compilation, which will aid reproductive rights groups.The Australian singer-songwriter’s Here And There touring festival kicked off in Kansas City, MO on Monday (August 8) and will visit 13 further stops before it wraps up Denver, CO on September 3. Each night features a unique line-up, featuring the likes of Japanese Breakfast, Wet Leg, Lucy Dacus and more.Some of the artists set to appear at Here And There have contributed to the new compilation, which will be released on a very rare and limited edition run of 600 cassette tapes.

Bright Eyes have announced the next wave of their Companions project, which will see the band reissue their back catalogue, accompanied by new recordings.Earlier this year, the trio shared “companion” records for ‘A Collection Of Songs Written And Recorded 1995-1997’, ‘Letting Off The Happiness: A Companion’, and ‘Fevers And Mirrors: A Companion’.This new set will see 2002’s ‘Lifted or The Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground’, and 2005’s ‘I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning’ and ‘Digital Ash In A Digital Urn’ be giving the same treatment. Each record will be released on November 11 via Dead Oceans and will include guest performances from Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings, Becky Stark and Maria Taylor.Across the releases, a series of covers will also be featured. They will include Bright Eyes’ take on Azure Ray’s ‘November’, Townes Van Zandt’s ‘Fare Thee Well, Miss Carousel’, and The Faint’s ‘Agenda Suicide’.Ahead of the arrival of the next three “companion” releases, Bright Eyes have shared new recordings from each record.

Supergrass have announced a special reissue of their self-titled third studio album.Released back in 1999, the original record contains the singles ‘Moving’, ‘Pumping On Your Stereo’ and ‘Mary’. Marcus Mumford has opened up about how his recent track ‘Cannibal’ deals with his childhood experience of sexual abuse.The Mumford & Sons frontman released the song last month as the first preview of his debut solo album ‘(Self-Titled)’, which is due for release on September 16 via Island. The 1975‘s Matty Healy has opened up in a new interview about his departure from Twitter.The frontman deactivated his account on the social media platform in 2020 after being criticised for sharing a post about George Floyd that included a link to the band’s single ‘Love It If We Made It’.Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American, died in the custody of local police in Minnesota in May that year. Footage subsequently emerged of an officer, Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Floyd’s neck.His death sparked international outrage, protests and a renewed focus on the Black Lives Matter movement.

Jarvis Cocker joined former Pulp bandmate and fellow Sheffield-born musician Richard Hawley on stage during his gig at the Leadmill last night (August 9), amid the venue’s ongoing eviction battle.During the second night of Hawley’s sold-out, four-date residency in support of the Leadmill – which faces closure after being given an eviction notice in March – Cocker reaffirmed his support for the legendary venue. Pulp performed their first full gig at the venue nearly 42 years ago, in August 1980.“It’s more than this building and this stage, it’s something that’s grown over years and it’s a feeling,” Cocker said of the Leadmill.
