Former fashion guru and TV star Susannah Constantine appeared on ITV Lorraine this morning to talk to Christine Lampard about her new memoir in which she reveals her close relationship with the Queen's sister, Princess Margaret.

Susannah dated Princess Margaret's son, Viscount Linley from 1983 to 1989 and during that time became very fond of his mother who she says was like a "surrogate" mother to her.

Speaking on the Lorraine sofa today today (September 29) she said: "When Sten (Bertelsen), my husband and I, got engaged, five years after David (Linley) and I stopped going out, I got a call from the palace to say Princess Margaret would like to give you a dinner." She added: "It was to celebrate my engagement.

And that was the loyalty and the relationship we both had. She wanted to check him out and make sure he was OK." Susannah continued: "I get quite emotional when I talk about her because I didn't keep in touch with her, I didn't feel it was right as David then went on and got married, and that's one of my big regrets. "I don't have many in life at all, but that is something I do regret, not keeping in touch." Writing in the Daily Mail at the weekend, Susannah said: "Princess Margaret taught me many things, but the most valuable was the need to know yourself and to have confidence to stand by your own opinions." She also says: "In writing my memoir, I spent many hours fondly remembering Princess Margaret and I realise the book is in part a love letter to a woman I considered for many years the closest thing I had to a surrogate mother." Adding later: "She gave me the courage to be myself, because that’s exactly what she always was.
