An investigation shows farms use pigtailed macaques to scurry up trees to pick up to 1,000 coconuts a day. A human picker can only gather about 80 a day.The animals are typically captured as babies and kept in cages when they are not working.The probe, by the Asian branch of animal rights body PETA, said they are treated like “coconut-picking machines”.Now Waitrose has pledged never to sell items obtained using monkeys.Waitrose spokesman said it has removed the brands from shelves.
