A popular Spanish holiday island is mulling over the idea of banning cruise ships as part of stringent new measures. Majorca is contemplating a prohibition on large cruise ships docking at the island and is considering levying a tourist tax on cruise passengers in an effort to regulate tourism.
In May 2022, the Balearic hotspot put a cap on the number of cruise ship arrivals per day to a mere three vessels. Within this limit, only one ship is permitted to have a capacity exceeding 5,000 passengers.
The Committee on Tourism, Trade, Employment, Culture and Sport is currently collaborating with the Balearic Government and cruise companies to renew the agreement and coordinate the timing of ship arrivals.
Mayor Jaime Martinez has put forward a proposal to banish large vessels and to permit only those cruise ships that designate Majorca as their home port to make stops at the island.
