Leeds once famously played host to the Flying Dentist on the wing - now it could be the Flying Doctor. South African Wilf Rosenberg earned his nickname in the 1960s courtesy of a host of spectacular finishes while working as a practising dentist in the city.
He was also one of the first rugby players to wear a mouth guard. Now over half a century on current Rhinos winger Tom Briscoe is about to start a doctorate in Sports Performance and Physiology, having earned a first class honours degree last year.
He has six years to complete his next qualification, and the England international hopes to still be in action then to become Super League’s first playing doctor.
