Spain has surpassed 10,000 coronavirus deaths after a world record 950 patients died just 24 hours - one of the highest single day tolls during the pandemic.

The total number of reported Covid-19 deaths in Spain increased to 10,003 on Thursday with confirmed cases increasing by 8,102 to 110,238, the health ministry said.

The country has the second most deaths in the world behind Italy (13,155) and the third most positive tests behind the US (215,344) and Italy (110,574), as of Thursday morning.

It is the biggest single day increase in deaths for any country since the outbreak began in China. Italy held the previous world record after reporting 919 deaths in 24 hours last Friday.
