As well as this, he was nominated for two more Oscars and numerous Golden Globes and BAFTAs in his career.The news of his death was confirmed earlier today but details about cause of death have not yet been released.His death comes soon after a Broadway play based on his career was announced last month.This is set to be written by Charles Randolph-Wright and to focus on his incredible life.The star was born in Miami while his family were on a work trip from the Bahamas, granting him US citizenship.He began his acting career in the theatre, before landing his film debut in No Way Out in 1950.His big break was in the Oscar-nominated film The Defiant Ones with Tony Curtis in 1958, cementing his place in Hollywood.Sidney went on to appear in films like A Raisin in the Sun, A Patch of Blue, To Sir, with Love and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner - as well as his Oscar-winning turn in Lillies of the Field.He later retired from his film career in 2000s, with his final on-screen appearance coming in a HBO documentary about Don Rickles in 2008.Then in 2009, he was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian honor in the USA.Outside of his career in film, Sidney also served as the ambassador of the Bahamas to Japan, which he held between 1997 and 2007.Following news of his death, tributes have been pouring in.Actor Jeffrey Wright wrote: "Sidney Poitier.
