A half-time phone call from Sir Alex Ferguson persuaded Manchester United to sign Cristiano Ronaldo - setting him on the way to becoming one of the game's superstars.

United spent much of the summer of 2003 chasing Ronaldinho, ultimately failing in their pursuit as the Brazil ace left Paris-Saint Germain for Barcelona.

The Red Devils did beat the Catalan giants to another target that summer, paying £12million to Sporting Lisbon to make Ronaldo the most expensive teenager in British football history.

Few could have predicted at the time that the then 18-year-old Ronaldo would go on to become one of the great players of all time.
