Senior SNP MP could be ousted by husband of local MSP

A senior SNP MP could be ousted from his seat by his local MSP's husband, according to reports.The party's EU spokesperson Alyn Smith is facing a challenge in his Stirling seat by Ahsan Khan, who is married to Stirling MSP Evelyn Tweed.iT is the latest of several challenges to emerge as the SNP currently undergoes its selection process for the next general election.Smith is one of the most high-profile of the Westminster MPs and was seen as an ally of Nicola Sturgeon.He told The Herald it would be “inappropriate to comment on internal selections for now.”He added: “What happens in the Stirling selection will be for the SNP members to decide and I’m proud of my record.“I’ll keep on with fighting for Stirling in Westminster and for Scotland’s independence in Europe.”He was elected to the seat in 2019, having previously been an MEP for 15 years.He became Europe and EU accession spokesperson after Stephen Flynn became SNP Westminster leader in December last year.Smith had previously served as foreign affair spokesperson for almost three years.The Herald reported that Smith campaigned for Khan in the Dunblane Bridge of Allan by-election earlier this year. “With a professional background in local government and housing, Ahsan is uniquely placed to dive deeper into local issues and work constructively to find a resolution,” he said in a column for the local paper.

But Khan lost out to the Tories.Tweed became MSP for Stirling in 2021. She and Khan live in Dunblane with their two teenage children.Smith is the latest sitting SNP MP to be challenged for his seat.
