A convicted murderer has admitted scarring a prison officer for life in a vicious attack. Michael “Madness” Smith pleaded guilty to assaulting warden Craig Hatcher to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
He armed himself with a “sharp implement” before using it to strike Mr Hatcher on the head in Addiewell Prison, West Lothian, Livingston Sheriff Court heard.
Smith, 32, was originally charged with repeatedly using the makeshift weapon to injure his victim, but the Crown accepted his claim that he only struck Mr Hatcher once during the incident on January 15, 2020.
