Parents said children at Manchester Enterprise Academy (MEA) on Simonsway, Wythenshawe, were kept in their classrooms instead of being allowed to go home at around 3pm today.
There were claims that some pupils had been so scared they hid under tables. Police said they were called to reports that a 'small group of unknown males' were on school property.
