Sainsbury's, Asda and Costa say they won't challenge customers not wearing face masks

Asda, Sainsbury's and Costa Coffee are among retail giants to say they will not enforce new face mask rules. From today, people in England will be required to wear coverings in shops, train stations, banks, takeaways and shopping centres.

Even people buying a takeaway coffee are among those required by law to wear a face covering from midnight on Friday. But some high street chains said they will not penalise customers who fail to do so.

Police can hand out £100 fines to people who flout the rules, but the College of Policing has said officers "should only be required as a last resort".
