But he famously failed to make the grade and struggled to make an impact on loan at West Bromwich Albion under Tony Pulis before leaving the Premier League.
He rejected the chance to stay at the Emirates to head to Werder Bremen in search of first-team football for just £5million in 2016.
It was at that time that he encountered Manchester United and England legend Rio Ferdinand whilst he was enjoying a holiday in Dubai.
