Graeme Perks suffered puncture wounds to his abdomen and chest in the attack in Halam, near Southwell, Nottinghamshire, just before 4.15am on Thursday.
Nottinghamshire Police said a 55-year-old man was arrested on Thursday as part of their investigation. Residents claimed the man arrested was a doctor.
One woman, who said she worked in the medical profession, who did not want to be named, said there's a rumour going around that the man arrested is a doctor.
