Police have issued a major update following a crash which caused a day of travel chaos in Greater Manchester. Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales trains were all cancelled on a key line through Salford following a crash at Regent Road on Friday (February 7).

Emergency services responded to a collision involving a sole car, a black BMW, at 2am on Friday. The vehicle had crashed through a concrete barrier on the pedestrian walkway at the Regent Road roundabout before landing on its roof on the tracks underneath.

Images showed the BMW as a crumpled wreck before being removed from the tracks - but the driver, a man in his 30s, remarkably survived the collision.

He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink-driving. In an update issued this morning (Sunday), Greater Manchester Police confirmed the driver remains in hospital following the crash.
