Beauty and the Beast, starring Elizabeth Taylor. He went from the film set to surrealist designer Elsa Schiaparelli’s atelier, then moved over to Christian Dior, working on the designer’s breakthrough New Look collection in 1947.

Dior called him “the future of haute couture”, and when Cardin left to set up his own fashion house in 1950, referred clients to his former assistant.A post shared by Telegraph Fashion (@telegraphfashion)Initially the house of Pierre Cardin turned out tailoring and costumes, but quickly grew into a haute-couture operation.

Cardin showed collections and opened a boutique, Eve, on the rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Rita Hayworth and Eva Peron dropped in to try on his bubble dresses.
